Iran’s upheaval is multi-dimensional
by R. Javidan
The history of civil unrest in Iran since the inception of the Islamic Republic in 1979 points at an ever-increasing discontent among the general population in Iran. Whether this is an existential threat to Iran’s regime has a lot to do with what the ruling class may decide to do with the current unrest. There is a substantive difference between this one and all the others. One may argue that this upheaval is a natural culmination of the preceding ones which were left unresolved and followed by more forceful repression. To more objectively digest the situation in Iran it might be advised to have an open mind about the classification of the protesters

IRANIANS

ECONOMY
Necessity of a Strong Social Sector as a Countervailing Power to Private Sector Dominance
The solution to the current global economic crisis which is the direct result of the private sector dominance and decades of deregulation (regulations in favor of the dominant private sector) is now being presented in the form of massive public (government) intervention by way of the public ownership. But the instantaneous reaction has been against such intervention on the ground that government intervention simply means the loss of freedom. How ironic that in the name of freedom, the very essence of freedom by way of commodity peddling, commodification, market supremacy and market fundamentalism is being altered. This is a natural outcome of indiscriminate application of concepts in an ideologically loaded, politically distorted process and private sector dominant environment

Today I’m going to talk to you about The Eyes, The Hips, and The Skin
What I’m about to reveal to you is not that difficult. As a matter of fact, it’s very easy. The truth is you already know how to do this. Here’s how it works. What I’m going to show you is – you observe yourself doing it and be more conscious when others do it. There are three things I’m going to talk to you today – The Eyes, The Hips, and The Skin. All three of them give you unconscious signals when someone communicating with you. Remember, when somebody is communicating, they are communicating more than the word that they are communicating. There’s body language, tone of voice and many other things.

This wretched heart of glass
Aches with each beat each pulse
Enfolded in pure silk net
The silk net is tight and strong
Won’t tear, expand or let go
Slowly squeezing the breath
Out of this heart that aches

Simin Behbahani's poem in English & Persian
by Translated by Korosh Khalili
A much unconsidered thought: “in this rotten land,
What can captives do, with shackles of confinement?”
To run with shackles, that’s a skillful deed,
Else the ball runs freely on the princes’ field.
Many such imprisoned, like the golden Sun,
Have laughed down on comedy of these showmen

VIEW
The World is sitting in disgust and anger, looking at the Ahmadinejad government
The world patiently waited for the Iranian election in hopes to see a change of sort towards moderation and semblance of sanity. Only to see their votes adulterated, their hopes vanished; frustration and anger renewed. As the events unfolded before us, we witnessed the extent and severity of the pain inflicted on Iranian people. We share that pain and feel obliged to stand by our Countrymen however we can. This Article is dedicated to those who had the courage to walk the streets with a green sign of defiance. At this stage , we find Iran in the state of a multi-dimensional cubical that could land on any side, and perhaps on the side that bears the center of gravity. At the top of this cubical is the ruling clerics

REFORM

LITERATURE
... in Sadegh Hedayat’s “Stray Dog” 1
“Stray Dog” is one of Hedayat’s best psycho-fictions and one of the most moving pieces he ever wrote. It is tempting to say that it is a fictionalised version of his youthful essay, “Man and Animal”. Its text and outer layer certainly represent an authentic and unmistakable fiction by the author of that essay and its sequel,
The Benefits of Vegetarianism.
2 It is true that Hedayat never ceased to condemn cruelty and injustice to animals in every possible way: both by word of mouth and by the pen.
3 In his fictional works, these sentiments find strong expression especially in “Stray Dog” and in “Alaviyeh Khanom”, here in the scene when the coach horses fall down

by AS

INJUSTICE
We must stand up when injustice is staring us in the face
The disturbing images of Iranians being threatened and beaten and killed has become all too common these days on all the online media. When I see baton-wielding men in uniform beating civilians, wherever they are from, I am disheartened. When I see that the victims are from my own country, I see in their faces my sister, my mother, my aunts and uncles and grandparents, and I am sickened. On July 28, 2009, Iraqi forces stormed Camp Ashraf, the compound of the Mujahideen Khalq Organization since 1986. Seven members of the organization were killed, and the number of those injured is still unclear, but likely very high. Dozens of members have been taken into custody for questioning. The headquarters that houses some 3400 Iranian men, women, and children, had been under the protection of the U.S. government

The Hollywood nose reigns supreme
My grandmother had a big nose. In some ways, she was a big nose that happened to have a body attached to it. Her nose was far bigger than Shruti Haasan’s nose. The actress’s former nose, that is. Even with surgery – and then more surgery – my grandmother’s nose would be bigger than Ms Haasan’s former nose. “I had a medical condition that restricted free breathing,” the 23-year-old told this paper the other week. “Now, post the surgery, I can finally sleep in peace and it has also enhanced my vocal skills. The said condition is called a deviated septum – the reason Ranbir Kapoor's parents are reportedly nudging him to go under the knife. The actor, however, is refusing to budge (or, at least, his nose is). According to bloggers, he's happy with his “crooked” piece and doesn’t need a “straight” one
