Kamran Khavarani, left, and Professor Albert Boime. It was astonishing that the author of such books as Art in the Age of Revolution, Art in the age of civil Struggle, and Art and the French Commune, would invert his panoramic perspective to focus an entire book on a single Rumi inspired Iranian artist.

Last year a friend showed me a book titled The Birth of Abstract Romanticism: Art for a New Humanity; Rumi and the Paintings of Kamran Khavarani by Albert Boime. The author is the late UCLA art historian Albert Boime whose keen social insights, articulated in over 140 books and articles, have upended our views of the great movements in art.
