Unsurprisingly, there are lots of drug addicts in these neighbourhoods. A couple of mornings passing through some of these alleyways, I saw men completely high and oblivious to the fact that they were sleeping in their own urine.

I am sure the Frankenthaler Rowing club would be evry impressed to see their T-shirt worn so proudly by an Afghan man in blacksmith’s workshop in Kabul’s old bazaar. What a small world! The blacksmith wanted me to take his photo and is striking a pose.

This is a public square with no through way, but because it is set deep into the neighbourhood, not many people find their way here. It seems to have been appropriated by one of the neighbours. This is the only square in the neighbourhood where one sees trees that are not mere saplings, although that is debatable.

Poor people sometimes burn the garbage as fuel. Since they do not separate the plastics, the smell of burn plastic is very common.
