They peel and shred the carrots here on the side of the road before they sell them. I still don’t know why. By the way in Dari, carrot is zardak.

The stench in some of these alleyways was unbearable. The ones that are not cleared yet are still used as public toilets. Granted, some of the ones that are cleared are also still used for that purpose. In this shot I was interested in documenting that access the alleyway has been blocked from this end, but the man thought I wanted to take his photograph. I hit two birds with one stone.

When I was taking the previous photo of the old man, I overheard the little boy say, ‘I hope they take my photo.’ Of course he didn’t realise that I understood him, so when I directed my lens at him, he was surprised.  As you can see, all of a sudden he got shy on me.
