14-Dec-2010 (18 comments)

The American Gulf

U.S. Navy's renaming of the Persian Gulf

12-Dec-2010 (32 comments)
In a move that threatens to exacerbate tensions in a region already pushed to the brink, the US Navy recently circulated an official directive to its personnel to refer to the Persian Gulf by the propaganda term "Arabian Gulf." The directive, appearing in the US Navy Style Guide, flies in the face of 2,500 years of acceptance of the term "Persian Gulf," and is viewed by many as means to divide the Middle East along ethnic fault lines. The Navy's controversial move reopens old wounds and engenders enmity that puts US service members in the region in danger>>>

WIKILEAKS

Misinformation Times

Actual U.S. cables belie New York Times' version

12-Dec-2010 (2 comments)
The dominant theme that emerged in U.S. media coverage of the first round of Wikileaks diplomatic cables last week was that Arab regimes in the Gulf - led by Saudi Arabia - shared Israel's view that Iran's nuclear program had to be stopped by military force, if necessary. The New York Times generated that version with a front- page story featuring an alleged quote by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia urging the United States to "cut off the head of the snake", as well as other statements by Gulf Arab leaders suggesting support for military action>>>

NOBEL

Prized Women

What does the Nobel Prize really signify?

12-Dec-2010 (2 comments)
The history of the Nobel Prizes shows how less the share of women has been compared to their male competitors. Excluding the number of times that the Noble Peace Prizes haven not been awarded mostly due to World War I and II, women have been honored 41 times since 1901. This is a little more than five percent of the total number of the Nobel Prizes awarded in a century. There are examples to indicate how the Nobel Peace Prize candidates were chosen in relevance to the existing Political era>>>

12-Dec-2010 (18 comments)

Shooting the Heart of the Monster

Interview with Shahriar Mandanipour

12-Dec-2010 (one comment)
Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy battles ghosts assassins, flees morality police, and has his thoughts crossed out by a writer trying to get his story past the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Welcome to Censoring an Iranian Love Story, Shahriar Mandanipour’s innovative novel that braids together the story of a writer attempting to pen a romance acceptable to the censors and the tale of two young lovers trying to connect in a country where being together could cost them their lives.>>>

Blow to U.S. and Israel's hopes for a new anti-Iranian alliance

09-Dec-2010 (36 comments)
Iran is winning and Israel is losing. That is the startling conclusion we reach if we consider how things have changed in the Middle East in the two years since most of the WikiLeaks State Department cables about Iran’s regional difficulties were written. Lebanon’s Sunni prime minister, once a virulent critic, quietly made his pilgrimage to the Iranian capital last week. Israeli hopes of separating Syria from Iran have been dashed. Turkey, once a strong ally of Israel, is now seeking better relations with Iran and with Lebanon’s Shiites>>>

09-Dec-2010 (35 comments)

BIRTHDAY

My Day, Rights Day

I hope we can stop this cycle of death, retribution, and revenge

09-Dec-2010 (2 comments)
December 10th is my birthday, and it coincides with Human Rights Day. I am grateful to be alive and well, but every year I realize that when it comes to global human rights, things are not any better, and Iran has certainly topped the list in the recent past. I wish I could write a jolly piece but my heart and soul are not joyful these days. Iran last year ranked second in executions, between China and the United States>>>

AMNESTY

Interview with Ann Harrison, Amnesty Int’l Middle East Specialist

09-Dec-2010 (4 comments)
A new definition of PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE caught my eye in an email exchange with a friend at Amnesty International. While it included political prisoner, the definition was much broader than what Iranians usually have in mind. I asked Ann Harrison to further explain how Amnesty International defines prisoners of conscience. Ann Harrison, a Middle East specialist, has worked for Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Programme for over 13 years in total since 1989>>>

Our Responsibility

Culture of human rights cultivates tolerance

09-Dec-2010
The cultural concept of human rights is universal: all human beings, male and female, are born equal with an essential dignity manifested in living freely and responsibly. The universality of human rights is founded on the interdependence of all human beings, so it is historically logical to stress that the principle of human rights belongs neither uniquely to the West, nor the East, but all people everywhere. A fair account of the history of human rights needs to be acknowledged by those aspiring to have theirs recognized>>>

09-Dec-2010 (7 comments)
